AZ-400 is the exam behind the Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert credential, and Microsoft expects you to arrive holding AZ-104 or AZ-204 already. It tests whether you can design a delivery process end to end: how code is branched and reviewed, how it is built and released, how identity and secrets are handled along the way, and how you find out what happened afterward. What is covered:

  1. Design and implement processes and communications - 91 questions. Work tracking and traceability in Azure Boards, integrating with communication tools, dashboards and reporting, delivery metrics, and choosing between build and release notification paths.
  2. Design and implement a source control strategy - 91 questions. Branching strategies from trunk-based development to release branch models, branch policies and pull request controls, repository scale with Git LFS and Scalar, forks, submodules, package feeds and versioning.
  3. Design and implement build and release pipelines - 371 questions. The largest area by a wide margin. Agents and pools, parallel jobs and concurrency, YAML pipelines and templates, deployment jobs and environments, blue green, canary and rolling patterns, feature flags and App Configuration, containers and database deployment, infrastructure as code with Bicep and deployment stacks, pipeline health and caching, retention, and migrating classic pipelines to YAML.
  4. Develop a security and compliance plan - 91 questions. Service principles against managed identities, GitHub Apps and token types, service connections and permissions, Key Vault, secretless authentication with workload identity federation, secure files and leak prevention, Defender for Cloud DevOps security, GitHub Advanced Security, container scanning, CodeQL and Dependabot.
  5. Implement an instrumentation strategy - 56 questions. Azure Monitor and its two workspace types, the current monitoring agent and data collection rules, the insights experiences, alerting and action groups, usage and performance telemetry, distributed tracing and Kusto Query Language.

Written as a decision exam, not a syntax exam:

The wrong preparation for AZ-400 is memorizing task inputs and YAML keys. Almost every question here gives you a situation with a constraint in it and asks which arrangement fits: which agent type, where a control belongs, which deployment pattern the risk calls for, whether a thing should be automated or approved.

Two options are usually both workable and one of them is right for the constraint that was stated. That is what the real paper does, and it is why candidates who know the tools well still fail it.

Explanations that teach the topic:

Every explanation explains the decision rather than repeating the winning option, and it names the boundary where the other choice would have been correct. That is a substantive difference, not a stylistic one: an explanation that says "use a deployment stack because a deployment stack is right here" leaves you no readier for the next question than you were before it. Each one also cites the document it was written from, so you can go and read the source rather than take our word for it.

Written against what is current, not what was current:

This is where most AZ-400 material has quietly gone wrong. Public projects in Azure DevOps are retired, and the unlimited hosted pipeline minutes that came with them go too. The Log Analytics agent retired in 2024, and its ingestion is being shut down, so an estate still running it is on borrowed time. Complete deployment mode is being deprecated in favor of deployment stacks, which reverses the answer most courses still teach for removing resources. GitHub Advanced Security for Azure DevOps is now two products bought separately. Every one of those is tested here, because every one of them is a question a candidate revising from last year's course gets wrong.
