CompTIA Network+ N10-009 practice exam is the vendor-neutral networking certification, and it is the exam most people sit between A+ and Security+. It covers what a network is made of, how it is built and operated, how it is defended and how it is fixed when it stops working. This practice exam holds 900 questions written against Exam Objectives Version 4.0. The document CompTIA publishes the V9 paper that launched in June 2024, and the split between domains follows the weightings printed in it rather than an even division.

What is covered in N10-009 practice exam:

  1. Networking Concepts - 207 questions. The OSI model layer by layer, appliances from routers and switches to load balancers and proxies, cloud service and deployment models, the ports and protocols list, traffic types, copper and fiber media with their connectors and transceivers, topologies including spine and leaf, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing with subnetting, and the modern environments the V9 revision added - software-defined networking, VXLAN, zero trust, SASE and infrastructure as code.
  2. Network Implementation - 180 questions. Static and dynamic routing with the order a router actually resolves a route in, the interior and exterior protocols, address translation and first-hop redundancy, VLANs and trunking, link aggregation, spanning tree from the root election through port roles and states, the wireless standards with bands, channels, encryption and authentication, and the physical side - distribution frames, racks, power and environmental monitoring.
  3. Network Operations - 171 questions. The documentation a network actually needs and what each kind is for, change and configuration management, life-cycle planning, availability and recovery with the four measures that get confused for each other, monitoring by polling, traps, flow data and capture, log aggregation, and the secure ways in - the VPN shapes, out-of-band access and jump hosts.
  4. Network Security - 126 questions. The security concepts as they apply to a network rather than in the abstract, encryption at rest and in transit, certificates and identity from multi-factor through RADIUS, TACACS+ and SAML, device hardening and network access control, security zones and filtering rules, and the attacks the objectives name - VLAN hopping, address table flooding, resolution and name poisoning, rogue servers and access points, on-path interception and denial of service.
  5. Network Troubleshooting - 216 questions. The methodology in the order CompTIA sets it, cabling and physical faults from duplex mismatches to optical power, service faults across spanning tree, segments, routing and address assignment, performance problems separated into capacity, delay, loss and timing, and the whole tool inventory - the command line, the device show commands, the hardware instruments and the wireless analyzer.

Written as a vendor-neutral exam, not a configuration exam:

Network+ tests whether you understand what a mechanism does and when it is the right one, not whether you can type a vendor's syntax. That is why the exam names seven show commands and no configuration commands at all, and why almost every question here starts from a situation rather than from a definition. The wrong preparation is memorizing command reference. The right preparation is being able to say what a symptom rules out: a port that is up and silent is not a cabling fault, a mask that is too narrow splits reachability on a power of two, and a link that is idle may be the protection working rather than anything broken. The questions are built around those distinctions.

Explanations that teach the topic:

Every question carries an explanation, and none of them restates the winning option. That distinction matters more than it sounds. An explanation that says a duplex mismatch is correct because the duplex was mismatched has taught you nothing you can carry to a question you have not seen. Each explanation here names the mechanism the question turned on, then the boundary where a different answer would have been the right one - why a discard is not an error, why a mask fault splits a segment arithmetically while a duplicate address makes one host unstable, why prioritizing traffic solves a contention problem and never a capacity one. Each also cites the objective it was written against, so you can take a topic you keep failing straight back to CompTIA's own document.

Drag-and-drop boards on every domain:

197 of the 900 questions are drag-and-drop boards, and they are spread across all five domains rather than concentrated where they were easiest to write. They exist because a large part of this syllabus is classification - which layer, which port role, which tool answers which question, which symptom points at which fault - and a four-option question tests recognition where a board tests whether you can separate five things that sound alike. Each board carries at least one tile that belongs nowhere, so it cannot be completed by elimination. There is a smaller set of questions built on real command output - a routing table, an interface counter, a resolution table, a path report - where the task is reading the output rather than recalling the command.

A+ Core 1 has already introduced cabling, connectors, wireless standards and small-office networking, and Network+ is where all four stop being inventory and start being decisions. Core 1 asks what a fiber connector is; Network+ asks why the link will not come up when light is present at both ends. If you have sat Core 1 recently, the media and hardware material here will feel familiar and the routing, spanning tree and troubleshooting domains will not - budget your time accordingly. Going the other way, Network+ is the usual step before Security+, and the security domain here is deliberately the network-shaped half of that syllabus.

How it is marked:

A sitting draws 90 questions from the pool of 900 and marks them out of 100. The pass mark is 70%, which is our own threshold and not a vendor scale. The 90 are drawn in the published domain weightings, so a sitting looks like the real paper's shape - roughly a quarter troubleshooting, a quarter concepts, and the rest split across implementation, operations and security. Your result breaks down by domain, so a pass with a weak domain still tells you where to go back to, and a fail tells you which of the five is actually costing you the exam.
