Core 1 covers the physical side of the job: mobile device hardware, networking, PC hardware and printers, virtualization and cloud concepts, and structured hardware and network troubleshooting. It was published on 25 March 2025 and replaced 220-1101, which retired on 25 September 2025. Note that A+ is a two-exam certification: passing Core 1 alone does not certify you, and Core 2 (220-1202) covers operating systems, security, software troubleshooting and operational procedures separately.
Most of the Core 1 objectives are phrased "Given a scenario", and the exam is written accordingly. A question puts you at a workstation with a set of symptoms and asks what they implicate, or in front of a specification and asks what it permits. The preparation that fails here is the one that works on a fact-recall paper: memorizing a table of port numbers and cable categories will carry you through a slice of domain 2 and leave you stranded in domain 5, which is the largest domain on the exam. These questions are written the same way. A troubleshooting question gives you observations and asks you to name the mechanism; a hardware question gives you a constraint and asks what fits.
Every one of the 700 questions carries an explanation, and none of them restates the winning option. That distinction matters more than it sounds. An explanation that says "the answer is a duplex mismatch because a duplex mismatch is the problem here" has taught you nothing you can carry to a question you have not seen. Each explanation here starts from the mechanism underneath the symptom - why a signal degrades over distance, why silicon lowers its own clock, why a repeating mark on a page names the roller that made it - and lets the observations follow from it. Where a question turns on a distinction, the explanation names the boundary and says where the other choice would have been correct. Each one also cites the CompTIA objective it was written from, by number and by title.

CompTIA states on its own exam page that the Core 1 paper includes drag-and-drop items alongside multiple choice and performance-based questions. Most practice material does not include a single one.
