It succeeded IT Fundamentals (ITF+, FC0-U61) when that exam retired in July 2025, and it is a wider paper than the one it replaced: security grew into a domain of its own, and artificial intelligence appears in the objectives for the first time. No prior experience is required, and nothing on it assumes you have worked in IT. The most common way to prepare badly for FC0-U71 is to prepare for it as though it were CompTIA A+. There is no command line on this exam and no configuration syntax to memorize. What it asks instead is whether you can name the right idea and choose sensibly between two that sound alike: which part of the CIA triad an incident broke, whether a value belongs in an integer or a string, whether a situation calls for a database or a spreadsheet, whether a control protects data at rest or data in transit. The questions here are scenario-shaped for that reason. Each one puts you in a small situation and asks for a decision, because that is the shape the objectives take - "given a scenario, configure security settings for a small wireless network" is not a definition question, and it does not reward a definition answer.
Every question carries an explanation, and none of them restates the winning option. That distinction matters more than it sounds. An explanation that says "the answer is availability because availability is correct here" has taught you nothing you can carry to a question you have not seen. These name the property that decided the question and the boundary where a different choice would have been right - why a laptop stolen while switched off is protected by disk encryption and one stolen while running is not, why a password known from a breach cannot be rescued by being long. Each explanation also cites the objective it comes from, so you can take a topic you got wrong back to the source rather than to a search engine.
138 of the 600 questions are drag-and-drop boards, and they are not decoration. A board asks you to sort several items at once - assign each incident to the security principle it broke, place the units of measure in order, decide for each permission whether least privilege keeps it or removes it - and every board carries at least one item that belongs nowhere, so it cannot be cleared by elimination. That is a harder and more honest test of whether you know a group of related ideas than four options and one click, and it is where most candidates find the gaps in what they thought they knew.

CompTIA positions Tech+ as a starting point rather than a destination, and the certification it leads to is A+. The overlap is real and it is uneven, which is worth knowing before you book the next exam. The operating system, software and security material reappears in A+ Core 2, which also introduces the command line that Tech+ deliberately leaves out. If you are working through this exam with A+ in mind, Infrastructure and Security are the two domains that repay extra time now, because almost nothing in them is wasted. What does not carry over as directly is Software Development Concepts and Data and Database Fundamentals - A+ barely touches either, and they are on Tech+ because it is a digital literacy credential rather than a support one. That is worth knowing in both directions: it is the part of Tech+ that A+ will not re-teach you, and the part you should not expect A+ to revise.
How it is marked:
The pass mark here is 70 percent of the questions you are asked, marked out of 100. A sitting draws 70 questions from the 600-question pool, weighted so that each domain appears in the proportion the objectives give it - so a sitting is a fair sample of the real paper rather than a random handful. Results break down by domain, which is what tells you where to spend the next study session rather than only whether you passed. The questions you got wrong are kept for review afterward, with their explanations, so a second pass through a weak domain does not mean sitting the whole paper again. Every question type is marked the same way, the drag-and-drop boards included, where an item left in the wrong place costs the question exactly as it would on the real paper.
